fameandfrippery:
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is in the running for a Jimmie Johnson/Helmet of Hope grant for $20,000 to go towards pediatric cancer research. I’ve been blasting this like crazy over Facebook and Twitter, and figured a blog post couldn’t hurt either.
TODAY is the last day for voting, and we’re…

Although this post is a tad bit post-weekend, I thought I should share the gastronomical epicenter of my birthday weekend celebrations: enter pies from Four & Twenty Blackbirds.

Forrst downtime post-mortem, 9/24
Forrst was down for approximately one hour today, 9/24 (between ~10:30 and 11:30am EST). During that time, we disabled logins to prevent database writes while we assessed the situation. The root cause was that our database server was slightly misconfigured and was allowing idle connections to sit around instead of flushing them. This caused us to quickly exceed our max connection limit, causing...
On Building Communities
wkdelhi:
From Kyle Bragger, founder of Forrst.
Your earliest users are vital to the success of the community.
Your web app is only a means to an end.
The community might end up in a slightly/vastly different place than you intended. Embrace it.
Be active as hell and be human.
Don’t take things so personally.
Have rules and enforce them.
Reward users for being awesome.
It’s okay to be...
Into The Forrst: Forrst Invites Redux →
forrst:
Today marks the launch of a big change in the way Forrst invites work, and I’d like to start off by saying that Forrst welcomes any developer or designer who’s passionate about getting better at their craft and helping others to do so as well, whether they’re the cream of the crop or just getting…
I’m really excited about this. I think it represents a crucial change in the...

Bike blenders aren’t necessarily new technology (I just googled a plethora of articles about them), but they are pretty flippin’ neat, and this was the first time I’ve actually seen one in action.
This contraption was being used today as a gazpacho soup making demo via GrowNYC’s…

fameandfrippery:
Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is an amazing organization I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with the past two years I’ve worked at OXO. Each year OXO hosts a giant bake sale in the Starrett Lehigh building (home to Martha, Tommy Hilfiger, Bodum, and a range of other bigtime…

fameandfrippery:
It’s Moodboard Monday folks. And considering I’ll be turning the ripe old age of 28 in a couple of weeks, I thought I’d whip together my annual visual wishlist to pass around to those I can typically score presents out of, (wink wink..kb). I kid. I kid…

A few random thoughts on building communities
Some learnings I’ve acquired over the past nine months building Forrst, bullet-point style and in no particular order:
Your earliest users are vital to the success of the community. They should be people you absolutely trust and/or know IRL (the first 100 or so users of Forrst were all either friends, current/former co-workers, or close friends of theirs)
Your web app itself is only a...
