Work Update: Photography and Construction
I normally don’t write too much on this blog. But I’m feeling inclined because the past few months have been awesome.
I started working on a construction project in Brooklyn for a new show that’s going to air on IFC in the winter. It’s called Dinner with the Band featuring chef Sam Mason from Tailor and a bunch of super awesome bands that haven’t been announced yet. In the show, Sam is going to cook for bands in his Brooklyn loft. I’m in charge of renovating that “the Brooklyn loft”. I’m not actually doing any of the physical work — my role is strictly managerial. If you’ve ever done a renovation, you know how many decisions need to be made on a daily basis, how much work it is to source the materials, and how easy it is for contractors to answer “two weeks” to every question if you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m working with Darin and Greg Bresnitz on the project. We’ve known each other our whole lives and we grew up in the same town. This working relationship has been in our families for two generations — my father renovated their parents house when we were younger — so this project is pretty special to me. We are about a month into construction right now and we’re hoping to have less than a month to go. You can follow the progress by viewing some of the photographs in the 234 set on my flickr page.
At the same time I’ve been stepping up my wedding photography game. Since last fall, I’ve been working with a wedding photographer named Raquel Reis. I started as her intern, moved up to studio manager part time, then began shooting weddings with her as a second shooter, and now I’m shooting weddings as a primary shooter. For a long time I avoided wedding photography because it had a bad reputation and attracted a lot of crappy photographers looking to make a quick buck. But I’ve learned wedding photography also attracts some very talented photographers who deeply enjoy what they are doing. Photographers like Christian Oth, Dennis Reggie, Jose Villa, Jason Calacanis, and my boss/mentor Raquel Reis. I personally think wedding photography is one of the more underrated careers for creative professionals. I hope things continue to go well for me in this field.
Anyway, I’m super excited about what’s going on. Let me know if you hearing about this stuff (I’ve re-enabled the comment system). Writing doesn’t come naturally to me, but I wanted to share.
